Tragedy on a much smaller scale than most of 2020 is still tragic. Wife of a police officer gets locked in the back of his car, dies from the heat.

Honestly there probably should be an alarm button back there that’s active if if the temperature is above or below certain set limits.
I also don’t really think that police officers should use their cars for commuting, and that if they do, no one other than the officer should be in them while off duty.

“When he woke up he was looking for his wife. His son began to help as well, and him and his son — the son, initially — ended up finding her in the back seat of his police car...
What a horrific nightmare to wake up to.

Sorry but my first reaction is to wait for the autopsy. Was there anything in her system? This would be a good way to kill an unwanted spouse by a cop. Dope or booze her up and shove her in. And wait... Ugly thoughts, I know. What would be her reason be to go into his patrol car in the first place?

This is what I’m trying to think of. Unless she wanted to be nice and clean it I can’t think of another reason to go in the back seat. It’s not like you store things there? But idk I’m not a LEO, maybe you put the groceries back there

Many places like the officers to take their vehicles home. It provides police presence in the local neighborhoods and helps reduce crimes.

I don’t get it. There’s nothing in the back of the patrol car one would want.
IF there was, car doors generally don’t close by themselves.
IF that happens, and she was crawling in there for some reason and happened to get stuck (I maybe have done this once or twice), certainly she could have screamed / banged / made enough noise that someone would see.
IF all of the above does not help, kicking out a car window is not the most difficult thing. Those look to be standard automotive glass and not plexi.

My experience is that officers don’t live in high-crime places (which is understandable). If anything, I think providing them free transportation encourages them to live far from the community they serve, decreasing police presence and encouraging a sense of otherness that leads to bad, adversarial policing.

My experience has been different. We were having problems with petty theft around the neighborhood until the sheriff’s deputy moved in down the street. I don’t really see the distance being an issue. I grew up with my mom commuting over an hour to get to work and I’ve done much the same. Transportation is a non-issue. T he school district was the driving factor in my home selection. One of my uncles is an officer who doesn’t get a free ride. He still lives over an hour away from his office.
